(The pictures will take some time to load up, have patience, if they don't show up, right click and click on 'show picture'.)
Although these things may seem a little old hat, you could change the rules by giving the creature some ability. I've already said dragons are my favourite, you can do sooo much with them! Then you can always make up your own creature. Here almost anything goes........

Now, as for adding a fairy, I would highly suggest trying to make it as unusual as possible. Odd coloured hair or abilities make it a very interesting character for a reader to bond with and help them see your world clearer.

These beautiful pictures could inspire you, unicorns may seem a little cliche, but they're always something well worth trying to describe, they're just a phenominal creature.

Also using beings like people with magic abilities like wizards, warlocks, witches...all those catagories are an interesting thing to add. Witches can be good, bad or neutral, young or old, but just because they're old it doesn't mean they have to LOOK old. It's all well and good putting in all that jazz, but try addng in anew kind of person with magic. I've created an Ishinka, which is a person who is gifted with battle magic and their own small personal gift, which can be anythign from calling dragons down to their aid to being able to fly and heal themsleves and others.
Give it a try! If this doesn't help, why not try a new catagory.....

Alright, this may not be the best idea, because I'm not too happy about people simply adding dragons in their story for a hero to kill, but why not presume that the dragon has been threatened by those two characters and the dragon is protecting it's owner from two evil characters. I know, I sound like a tree hugger, or a dragon hugger, but something new would be great! But then if you can add something new but craftily add something traditional in, that is good skill. Adding things like fairies can be good, they don't have to be miniature people with wings, look at what Shigaro did on Zelda, he made this little pink ball with wings. It was still a useful (But often annoying at times) fairy. Or you can have unicorns and things like that, griffins, elves, goblins, stuff like that. Even more skilled writers add horror into a fantasy landscape. I love those things.
